BASS SECTION

All Photographs by Katrin Talbot
Musician profiles are in alphabetical order.

CARL DAVICK
Noteworthy: Played with renowned bassist Gary Karr; performed St. Matthew Passion under Robert Shaw; performed with Oakwood Chamber Players for Kennedy Center's 25th Anniversary; orchestra director for Monona Grove; B.M. from St. Olaf and M.M. from Northwestern; father of one.
Oddest practice quarters: The empty bar of the Watergate Hotel.
What your colleagues don't know about you: Played the piccolo solo in Star and Stripes Forever on the tuba.

ROSS GILLILAND
Noteworthy: Pursuing Bachelor degrees in music and physics at UW-Madison; also a member of Con Vivo, a chamber ensemble.
Oddest practice quarters: A milking shed in a barn.
Funniest concert experience: Arriving at a rescheduled performance only to witness the promoter drive off on a moped to "scare up" an audience of friends and neighbors. A show's a show.
What your colleagues don't know about you: I tour with my ska band in the off-season, and have a black belt in karate...a deadly combination!

STEVEN KASPRZAK
Noteworthy: Graduate of UW School of Music; recently returned for teaching certification; play with Dubuque and Waukesha Symphony; former WYSO member.
Oddest practice quarters: A garage.
Funniest concert experience: Watching a mouse scurry among the cello section during a performance.
What your colleagues don't know about you: Many people who have heard me sing in other venues consider me more of a singer than a bass player.
Recurrent musical fantasy: Performing a jazzed up rendition of "At The Hop" with a bass quartet for the half time show at the Super Bowl (and having Brett Favre give us a "thumbs up" and wink afterwards.)

FREDRICK SCHRANK, Principal
Noteworthy: Graduate of UW-Madison School of Music; taught elementary and high school strings in Sun Prairie since 1994; now teaching strings in Madison School District; published articles on jazz for string orchestra.
Funniest concert experience: During a Madison Symphony concert at the Stock Pavilion, a bat decided to dive-bomb the orchestra and audience. My dad was in the audience and as the bat flew towards him, he threw his raincoat and escorted the creature outside while receiving a rousing round of applause.
What your colleagues don't know about you: I'm an avid builder and pilot of radio controlled model airplanes and a recumbent bicycle enthusiast.
Recurrent musical fantasy: To record some CDs with the Madison Symphony and to play electric violin with the original members of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
