Prelude Discussion by
John Schaffer, Professor of Music History,
UW-Madison School of Music
The dramatic fire of Brahms' brilliant third symphony sets the stage for our guests, the Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Led by distinguished conductor Carl St.Clair, they'll interpret the flaring flamenco rhythms and foot-stomping bolero style of Joaquin Rodrigo's lively Concierto Andaluz. Then Rimsky-Korsakov's exotic Capriccio Espagnol features virtuosic solos throughout the orchestra and evokes a lively musical landscape of Spanish song and dance. The kaleidoscopic finale brings our concert to a thrilling close.
"St.CLair and the orchestra offered a richly imagined account.... He conjured an autumnal glow from the strings, and captured the intense drama and breathtaking repose of this great score." - Los Angeles Times
"[The LAGQ offers] inspired yet deceptively easygoing virtuosity that exists when discipline and spontaneity are balanced to perfection." - Washington Post

"It never ceases to amaze me--the complexity of the music, the voices, the rhythms, the harmonies, the dissonance, the texture, the dynamics--the package of music that the Madison Symphony Orchestra delivers. It is a spiritual inspiration, an emotional motivation, and an intellectual stimulation." - Diane Endres Ballweg
