R. STRAUSS
Piano Concerto No. 1
“To welcome you to your symphony this season, we greet you with three giants of the German Romantic tradition, Beethoven, Strauss and Brahms. I chose Beethoven’s
Consecration of the House Overture for its stately processional opening and thoroughly Handelian fugue. Then Richard Strauss’
Death and Transfiguration traces the dying thoughts of an artist, who finds 'gloriously achieved in everlasting space those things which could not be fulfilled here below.' And we enthusiastically welcome back the legendary
Peter Serkin, who enjoys a unique position among his peers, with his keen intelligence and his consummate pianism. He will bring out all the virtuoso fire and youthful passion of what was to have been Brahms’ first symphony, the Romantic masterpiece,
Piano Concerto No. 1.” -
