CONDUCTS

The Madison Symphony Chorus opens this concert with Stravinsky's expertly interwoven setting of three simple Old Testament Psalms. Piety turns to delight with Schumann's effervescent Piano Concerto in A minor, performed by the extraordinary Avery Fisher Career Grant winner Christopher Taylor, one of Madison's favorite pianists. (Hear hisMessiaen performance.) After intermission, we'll follow the hushed melodies of Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis to end with Tchaikovsky's Francesca da Rimini, the rich, dramatic tale of star-crossed lovers forever trapped in the storm of Dante's Inferno.

"Those who know the pianist Christopher Taylor tend to speak of him in the hushed, reverent tones typically reserved for natural wonders if not the otherworldly. Colleagues trip over words like 'innocence,' 'fervor,' 'beauty' and 'vision' in an attempt to capture his elusive personality."
