UP CLOSE & MUSICAL®

Up Close and Musical® brings the power and beauty of classical music into the classrooms of elementary schools throughout Dane County. The curriculum is guided by the Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance model and the Wisconsin State Model Academic Standards for Music, bringing the Hunt Quartet into six schools four times each year. Individual quartet members visit separate classrooms to conduct exciting and interactive lessons that send students on a hunt for the concepts of melody, rhythm, expression, and form. They then demonstrate these concepts in a performance for the whole school!
At the end of the school year all of the participating schools are invited to attend Symphony Soup, which brings young people from across south-central Wisconsin into Overture Hall to experience classical music the way it was meant to be heard – live! At this culminating concert, the Hunt Quartet is featured among a full symphony orchestra.
“After the Kindergarten mini-concert, a child said, ‘That was the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard!’” – Participating Teacher
This year’s participating schools are Blessed Sacrament, Lindbergh, Shorewood Hills, and Thoreau Elementary Schools in Madison; Stoner Prairie Elementary School in Fitchburg; and Sauk Trail Elementary School in Middleton.
If your school would like to participate in this program, please contact MSO Director of Education Kathryn Schwarzmann at (608) 257-3734 x 225 or kschwarzmann@madisonsymphony.org.
